Fluoride

Professional fluoride treatments strengthen tooth enamel and help prevent cavities in children and adults by making teeth more resistant to acid attacks that cause decay.

What Is Fluoride Treatment?

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that helps prevent cavities in children and adults by making the outer surface of your teeth more resistant to the acid attacks that cause tooth decay. At Eastern Dental of Vineland, we use professional fluoride treatments to strengthen enamel, which is the outer protective layer of your teeth.

In the United States, you can sometimes find fluoride in your local water supply and in many over-the-counter products, including:

  • Toothpaste
  • Mouth rinses
  • Supplements

However, professional fluoride treatments delivered in our office contain higher concentrations and provide stronger protection for patients who need it most.

Conditions That Could Benefit From Extra Fluoride

If you have certain conditions, you may be at increased risk of tooth decay and would benefit from additional fluoride treatment. These conditions include:

  • Dry mouth – Reduced saliva flow means less natural protection against decay
  • Gum disease – Exposed root surfaces are more vulnerable to cavities
  • History of frequent cavities – Past decay indicates higher risk for future problems
  • Presence of crowns, bridges, or braces – Dental work creates areas that are harder to clean

If you tend to get a lot of cavities, we might suggest using a prescription mouth rinse with fluoride. These rinses usually have a higher concentration of fluoride than over-the-counter options.

Professional Fluoride Application

During your dental visit, we can apply fluoride directly to your teeth using a gel, foam, or rinse. The treatment is quick, painless, and highly effective at strengthening enamel and preventing decay.

The best way to determine if you would benefit from additional fluoride is by making an appointment with us. We can examine your teeth, make an accurate diagnosis, and give you our recommended treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.

Common questions
Is fluoride treatment safe?+

Yes, fluoride treatment is safe and has been used in dentistry for decades. When applied professionally, it strengthens enamel without any harmful side effects. We use the appropriate concentration for your age and needs.

How often should I get fluoride treatments?+

Most patients benefit from fluoride treatments every six months during regular dental visits. However, if you have a high risk of cavities or certain dental conditions, we may recommend more frequent applications.

Can adults benefit from fluoride, or is it just for kids?+

Both children and adults benefit from fluoride treatments. Adults with gum recession, dry mouth, frequent cavities, or dental work like crowns and bridges often need extra fluoride protection just as much as children do.
