In the United States, you can sometimes find fluoride in your local water supply and in many over-the-counter products, including:

• Toothpaste
• Mouth rinses
• Supplements

However, professional fluoride treatments delivered in our office contain higher concentrations and provide stronger protection for patients who need it most.

Conditions That Could Benefit From Extra Fluoride

If you have certain conditions, you may be at increased risk of tooth decay and would benefit from additional fluoride treatment. These conditions include:

• Dry mouth – Reduced saliva flow means less natural protection against decay
• Gum disease – Exposed root surfaces are more vulnerable to cavities
• History of frequent cavities – Past decay indicates higher risk for future problems
• Presence of crowns, bridges, or braces – Dental work creates areas that are harder to clean

If you tend to get a lot of cavities, we might suggest using a prescription mouth rinse with fluoride. These rinses usually have a higher concentration of fluoride than over-the-counter options.
